The much awaited library landscaping project is set to begin this week. In anticipation of this project we've sent some of our burning questions to our Public Works Director, Steve Ziegler. See these questions and answers below.
Q1 : What are the main goals of the xeriscape project, and how will it benefit the community?
Public Works Director : The goal is water conservation. Estimated 1.2 acre feet of water a year will be saved. It sets a good example for the community by conserving water where it makes sense and it will have an educational benefit with information on the plants and water retention.
Q2 : In what ways do these projects support the town’s long-term sustainability and livability goals?
Public Works Director : Water is life! Therefore the Town needs to be good stewards of the water considering the drought has been going on in Arizona since 1994. The more water conserved will help when the Town is forced to mandate water restrictions to all of the water customers which could happen in the future.
Q3 : What is the expected timeline for starting and completing this project?
Public Works Director : Project starts October 1, 2025
Q4 : When this project starts, what steps can the community expect to see happening?
Public Works Director : Removal of the top layer of dead grass and dirt, grading and digging to reroute the irrigation. Layout of the new design, digging and planting the trees and plants. Placing the river rock, crushed granite and pavers.
Q5 : Can you share some details about the xeriscape design—such as plant choices, water-saving features, or educational elements?
Public Works Director : All plants and trees are drought tolerant and have low water usage. Willow Acacia and Palo Verde trees, Saguaro, Desert Willows, Ocotillo’s, Red Yucca, Blue Agave, Desert Spoons, Red Bird of Paradise and Firecrackers. It will be ADA compliant as well.
Q6 : How is this project being funded (grants, town budget, partnerships)?
Public Works Director : It is funded by a WIFA Grant.
Q7 : How can the community stay updated on the progress of the Xeriscape?
Public Works Director : Check the website or just drive by.
Q8 : What other upcoming projects should the community be excited about?
Public Works Director : The Jailhouse Rehabilitation, registered National Historic Building built in 1914.
